cropped-prayas-logo-2.pngThe organization was established in 1982 while it was registered in 1984. The founder of the organization was Shree Udai Narayan Choudhary. He was a Dalit himself and was a student leader of the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan movement, during emergency. He, along with other young leaders recognized that a peaceful movement by the Dalit for their own cause could lead to the entitlements and rights of the deprived and the marginalized Dalit. Later, several efforts were made for the rights and entitlements of the Dalits in the state and they were quite successful.

In its initial phase, the organization was working in only 15 villages in the Phulwari Sharif Block of the Patna district. It was working on the issues of Dalit with special reference to their identity and dignity. This led to the community organization processes and thereby, 15 village level groups of Dalits were formed.

Later, minimum wages, bonded labour, atrocities against women, untouchability came up as the issues to be addressed. By the year 1987, it started to work on the Amas block of the Gaya District on similar issues. Further, in 1988, the organization started working in North Bihar, focusing Darbhanga as an intervention area where poverty reduction was the main issue among the Dalits.

Income generating activities with the Dalits was started, to secure their livelihood locally. By the year 1990, the organization became one of the highlighted organizations working on Dalit issues in the state. Meanwhile, Mr. Udai Narayan Choudhary was also working on developing, a second line leadership. He had transferred the responsibilities to the other active members of the core group at the end of 1990. Since then, this organization has been led by other core group members who were all Dalits.

From 1990 to 2005, the organization consolidated its activities in the listed three districts, but after 2005 it was spread in the 9 districts through its network of Dalit Adhikar Manch. Today, Prayas Gamin Vikas Samitee is a leading organization for the cause of Dalits through the Dalit Adhikar Manch in 28 districts of the state. It is also linked at the national level with various networks.
